DESCRIPTION

1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) Group A

The car that started the legend.

Nissan was determined to make their mark in Australian Motorsport, and engaged Gibson Motorsport to run their Australian program. What Gibson and his team were able to develop, has lead to not only countless victories and being so successful they changed the rules to ban the GTR, it also produced the basis - the N1 block that has become the corner stone of the GT-R in future generations.

The ‘GIO’ car was the only Nissan GTR prepared by Gibson Motorsport for a private team, the other 4 vehicles were ran in the ATCC in 1991 and 1992 seasons as the Nissan Motorport team cars.

It won it’s maiden event, the 1991 Sandown 500 by 6 laps brining about balance of performance ‘handicaps’ for the rest of the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

With Mark Gibbs and Rohan Onslow, the car competed in the Australian Touring Car Championship, but did not compete in all rounds. The main events of the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000, the GIO car with Gibbs and Onslow beat dozens of factory teams to claim 3rd in the 1991 Bathurst 1000 and 6th in the 1992 Bathurst 1000.

The Nissan GTRs were so successful that the ATCC changed the rules to prevent their entry into the 1993 season. Since then the GIO car has run in some historic events and cherished by it’s previous owners.
